36 CHRISTIAN WAYS TO REDUCE STRESS

An Angel says, "Never borrow from the future. If you worry about what may happen tomorrow and it doesn't happen, you have worried in vain. Even if it does happen, you have to worry twice."

1. Pray


2. Go to bed on time.


3. Get up on time so you can start the day unrushed.


4. Say No to projects that won't fit into your time schedule, or that will compromise your mental health.

5. Delegate tasks to capable others.

6. Simplify and unclutter your life.

7. Less is more. (Although one is often not enough, two are often too many.)

8. Allow extra time to do things and to get to places.

9. Pace yourself. Spread out big changes and difficult projects over time; don't lump the hard things all together.

10. Take one day at a time.

11. Separate worries from concerns. If a situation is a concern, find out what God would have you do and let go of the anxiety. If you can't do anything about a situation, forget it.

12. Live within your budget; don't use credit cards for ordinary purchases.

13. Have backups; an extra car key in your wallet, an extra house key buried in the garden, extra stamps, etc.

14. K.M.S. (Keep Mouth Shut). This single piece of ad-vice can prevent an enormous amount of trouble.

15. Do something for the Kid in You everyday.

16. Carry a Bible with you to read while waiting in line.

17. Get enough rest.

18. Eat right.

19. Get organized so everything has its place.

20. Listen to a tape while driving that can help improve your quality of life.

21. Write down thoughts and inspirations.

22. Every day, find time to be alone.

23. Having problems? Talk to God on the spot. Try to nip small problems in the bud. Don't wait until it's time to go to bed to try and pray.

24. Make friends with Godly people.

25. Keep a folder of favorite scriptures on hand.

26. Remember that the shortest bridge between despair and hope is often a good "Thank you Jesus."

27. Laugh.

28. Laugh some more!

29. Take your work seriously, but not yourself at all.

30. Develop a forgiving attitude (most people are doing the best they can).

31. Be kind to unkind people (they probably need it the most).

32. Sit on your ego.

33. Talk less; listen more.

34. Slow down.

35. Remind yourself that you are not the general manager of the universe.

36. Every night before bed, think of one thing you're grateful for that you've never been grateful for before. GOD HAS A WAY OF TURNING THINGS AROUND FOR YOU. "If God is for us, who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31)

Sleeping With The Givers, Frank Hanna, and the Joys of Giving

One Mercedes Benz TV commercial shows its car colliding with a cement wall during the safety test. Somebody asked the company spokesman why they do not enforce their patent on the Mercedes Benz energy-absorbing car body, a design evidently copied by other companies because of its success. The spokesman's reply: "Because some things in life are too important not to share."

...Even in a dog-eat-dog, cutthroat world of business, sharing has its place.

God has never intended for us to cling to the things He lavished on us. All the talents, all the gifts, all the blessings are meant to be shared.

There's a story of a Pastor who was profusely thanked by a farmer after hearing his sermon on giving. The Pastor, testing the farmer, asked, "If you had one hundred horses, would you give me fifty?" The farmer replied, "Certainly!" The Pastor went on, "If you had one hundred cows, would you give me fifty?" And the farmer nodded again. If you had two pigs, would you give me one?" the Pastor continued. The farmer lost his cool and said, "Now, cut that out, Pastor, You know that I have two pigs!"

If there's one thing I have come to understand in this life, it is this: giving is always more blessed than receiving. As we give our time, talent and treasures to those who need them, the joy we experience is indescribable.

Take a good look around you and you'll see that the people who are in the business of giving are usually the happiest people on earth. That officemate who keeps on sharing her food during breaks, listening to those in distress. That manager who shares his knowledge and expertise to the new employees. [And many more like them.] These people are always enjoying every minute of what they are doing.

What can you give? Well, you can give your love for a start. A little of your precious time. A portion of your treasure.You don't have to look far. Those who are in need are near you, even right beside you.

During the years that I spent with my wife… before I went to my sojourn in the Middle East… we have both learned to appreciate and be satisfied with small and simple things. We have learned to be contented with the simple joys of life, and not be attracted to the false glitter of luxury… and extravagance… again. In our years together, we have experienced how is it to have most of what you wanted that money can buy…. and we have also experienced how is it to have nothing at all.

And what we have learned from this experience is this : Life is NOT about focusing all our energies in acquiring things that we DON’T HAVE… (specially things that we WANT but not necessarily things that we NEED), but on being satisfied with what we already HAVE.

An important aspect here is in the area of giving, specially to those who are needy. Me and my wife have often discussed how we could be well-off if we haven't shared our resources to needy family members or relatives or have been too selfish to extend help to people who came to us for help. But that was not what we have learned in all our years together. We are more content in giving, which gives us much joy that having an abundant supply of money could not give.

Speaking of money, I came across a blog by Frank Hanna on what money should really mean for us. As I have also written in my letters and in what Frank Hanna have written in his blog that money is not evil in itself and actually can be used to do good, particularly in the area of providing for those who are needy. Frank Hanna is a philanthropist and has practiced this for a long time and in his book "What Your Money Means" he teaches us the real value and purpose of money as he have learned through his experience and from wisdom books.

Let us learn to be like givers and sharers who are always willing to give to others who are in need.... even if it means dipping into their already meager resources.... even if it hurts.

Rest assured that when the Heavenly Father sees this goodness in your heart, he will return this to you a hundredfold and will open up the floodgates of heaven until you will have no more room to receive His blessings!

Renew International: Longing for the Holy



In an earlier posting I've discussed about how each one of us go through a "desert" in our lives - it could be a break up, a loss of a loved one, unemployment or so on. The nature of the "desert" could be different but one thing is certain, we all must pass and journey through it alone. In our loneliness, we begin to rely on God, and when we rely on Him, we can then see Him. Passing through this desert breaks down the walls that we built around ourselves and in our brokenness we have no one else to turn to - but Him.

LETTERS: My Weakness, His Strength

( Original Letter : June 22, 2003 )


To my dear friends in Christ;

Kamusta na kayong lahat diyan? It seems I’m having trouble receiving email traffic from the SFC Muntinlupa egroups, although Pearl confirmed that you received my previous “Letters”. Anyway, I always hope to receive individual emails from all of you – anything from chika-chika, to problems, and to old, plain and simple kamustahan. It would be a source of upliftment and encouragement for me, lalong-lalo na ngayong malayo ako sa inyo at sa iba ko pang mga loved ones.

Mahirap talaga ang buhay-Saudi. I don’t know where people got the notion that Saudi Boys are pa-easy-easy lang; marami at madaling makakuha ng pera; at puro good time. It’s completely the opposite here. But there are also light moments here that I would cherish.

One example is this incident when I went to Batah ( it’s like the Divisoria and Baclaran here in Riyadh, particularly in the Pinoy Market area, para mamasyal (nakaka-buryong naman kasi talaga!!! ). I was wearing this t-shirt that my father sent me. It was a t-shirt that he bought from Bangladesh, while he was working there. It has a very nice rubberized picture printed in the front with the word “Bangladesh” in clear, bold letters below the picture. Now, in Batah, most of the store vendors are Bangladeshi guys, and they were making a big deal of my wearing a t-shirt with “Bangladesh” printed on it. They were very surprised why a clearly Filipino guy would wear a t-shirt such as this. I was wondering why my t-shirt elicited such a reaction from them.

Then it dawned on me. The Bangladeshi people are considered one of the cheapest and the lowest of the low in Saudi’s labor force – while the Pinoy is way up there on top of the ladder. They really look up to us Pinoys as “above” their class. No wonder their eyes bulged when they saw me wearing a t-shirt like that. It would have been different if they saw me with a t-shirt saying Chicago Bulls, Italy or even Cebu….. but Bangladesh…. a… a….

The Bangladesh people are not the only ones who look up to the Pinoy this way, but the other nationalities as well – Nepali; Pakistani; Indian; Sudanese; Thailanders; etc. Even the western nationals – the Brits and the Yanks – would choose a Pinoy over the other nationals any day. But you know what, we Pinoys tend to be rude and arrogant to other nationalities because of that – even to our own. Let’s face it – the Pinoy has many strengths, even rivaling what the rest of the world has to offer – but we also have flaws that tend to negate these strengths, pulling us all down – specially with regards to our kalokohans.

In a society where a man could not associate with a woman in public unless they’re married – Pinoys still find ways to have “dates” – irregardless of their date’s marital status, if you know what I mean. In a society where possession of liquor is punishable by law ( in the old days, it would be a death sentence) – Pinoys still have a way to make their own homemade brew, and make profits out of it. ( Not only liquor, but even drugs. ) In a society where gambling is prohibited – Pinoys flourish with Pusoy, Tong-its, Mahjong, the local version of huweteng, and I’ve heard even sabong. ( There’s a whole lot more, and this prompted me to write about it as a script which I submitted to Star Cinema. I’ll share that to you later on. )

These things tend to pull the Pinoy down. But those who perpetrate these things are even proud that they can get away with it – and alas, most Pinoys here would agree. Blame it on homesickness, they would say . Yeah, that word again – homesick.

I think I’ve written to you before how homesickness could really gnaw up to your bone marrow, for someone who’s away from their loved ones for a long time – just like me. But in these hours of weakness, in these moments of vulnerability, who do we turn to? Just like David, we turn to Him:

“ The Lord is my strength and my shield,
in him my heart trusts. ”

Psalm 28:7 RSV

For the Lord said :

“ God said I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my victorious right hand. ”

Isaiah 41:10 RSV

And He Himself showed us the way :

“ For we do not have a High Priest who is unable
to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have One
who has been tempted in every way, just as we are –
yet was without sin. ”

Hebrews 4:15 NIV

Paul was one of the greatest Apostles, although he was not one of the original Twelve. He was entrusted by God surpassing wisdom and knowledge never before revealed to man – and thus he was tasked with the ministry of bringing the Good News to the gentiles – to us. And yet, he did not boast of this greatness, nor let it get into his head. In fact, he himself said :

“ If I must boast, I will boast of the things
that shows my weakness. ”
2 Corinthians 11:30 NIV

Bible scholars say that Paul has some form of deformity in his body. Some say he may have been a hunchback and others speculate that he may have been a Stigmata ( having a wound identical to Christ – and it won’t heal ). And any of these things came upon him during his ministry to the gentiles. He himself chronicled this in his letter :

“ To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a THORN IN MY FLESH a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me, but He said to me, ‘My Grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weakness, so that Christ’s Power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weakness, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong . ”
2 Corinthians 12: 7-10 NIV

“My Power is made perfect in WEAKNESS,” that’s what Jesus said to Paul – and the same applies to us. It’s during the time of weakness that we should rely more on Him – in fact we should rely everything on Him. The more we put our trust in Him, the more His power in us is made more evident.

Easily said than done, ‘di ba? In times of weakness, in times of loneliness, in times of brokenness – we tend to lose our trust in Him. We rely more on what we know we have – our own strength – and tend to lose whatever faith we got.

But if we learn to rely more on Him in everything – lalong-lalo na sa mga oras na walang-wala na talagang pag-asa or give-up ka na – we’ll soon discover that He really is true to His promises; that He really is our refuge and strength, a very present help ( take note of the word “present” meaning timing) in times of trouble ( Psalm 46:1). I know – I’ve experienced it first hand so many times. And taking Paul’ example :

“ I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through Him who gives me strength . ”
Philippians 4: 12-13 NIV

“ I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.” Wow! Strong words, strong implications – but these are not merely words, mind you.

How can we learn to trust in Him? Know His Promises. And how do we do that? – by contemplating on His Word. You know, there are times when I really feel down. Even though I’ve just talked with Mommy Jing or Kenji on the phone, once you’ve been hit by homesickness, it really gets kind of lonely out here. What do I do? I gain strength through His Words. In this strict society where other religion is banned, I happen to accidentally ( if I could really term it an “accident” as this has been one of “mysterious ways” from God ) found a small booklet called “Daily Strength”. True to its title, His Words that is contained in this small booklet really sustains me, for, as the first Scripture reference in this book says :

“ That… by the encouragement of the Scriptures
we might have hope . ”

Romans 15:4 RSV

So, my brothers and sisters, learn to trust in Him. As the song goes, “…lean not on your own understanding”. In times of weakness – look to Him – and you’ll find strength – His Strength.

At the precise moment that I’m writing this letter, I was also communicating with Pearl ( thru SMS ) that you guys are there together with the Couples at the CFC Family Ministries Anniversary. Wow, I sure do hope I could be there with you so we could rock the place together. Anyway, I know that He, the Rock Himself, is there with you…. to give you STRENGTH in everything. See ya later!!!

Compound Interest

( I would like to share an article from my friend Richard Rundell)

Einstein said that the greatest thing was compound interest. What is compound interest? You earn interest on not only the principal but also on the interest earned. Interest on the interest. Who created the concept of compound interest? God. If God created it for the financial world then would not He also apply that same principle to spiritual things? Paul wrote to the Ephesians,

“Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen”
(Eph 3:20-21).

Neither God’s love nor power is limited by our imaginations.

God does not subtract or add but multiplies and He does not just multiply but multiples at a compound rate. What is God’s interest rate? Five percent? No! A thousand percent or a million percent, whatever the need. Did He not multiply the loaves and fishes to feed 5,000 men plus women and children?

When God gives you revelation knowledge and you put it into practice, He gives you not only new revelation knowledge the next day or moment, but also revelation knowledge applied to the revelation knowledge He just gave you. That is compounding. Just as your savings account does not just sit in a bank vault but the banker invests it in means of production, so we must first acknowledge the gifts and blessings God gives us and second, put them into practice. But just as the banker needs the initial deposit with which to work with or to apply interest, we need to study and meditate on the Scriptures in order for God to have something with which to work and begin to compound.

Revelation knowledge is not a dead end street. But as we receive revelation knowledge, it opens new doors to further revelation knowledge. Remember that Peter, by revelation knowledge, declared that Jesus was the Christ (Matt. 16:16). We can apply the same principle to our initial salvation experience. It is not an end in itself but the beginning of our Christian walk and a glorious relationship with Jesus Christ. The gifts of the Spirit likewise are not ends in themselves but the beginning of a means to help us bless the body of Christ and to give glory to God.

God not only gives us blessings but blesses (compounds) those blessings. He not only grants us holiness but compounds that holiness with a holy application of that holiness. What about grace? God not only gives us grace but graces (compounds) the grace He has just given us.

As we receive the love that God imparts to us, and we reach out to others with that love, God compounds that love by heaping new forms of love on our very acts of love. The same principle applies to joy, peace and other characteristics of the Christian life God gives to us. Let us rejoice for His unspeakable, exceeding, abundant love for us.

THE GARDEN OF LOVE

Before I met my husband, John, every attempt I'd made to find and keep love had led to disappointment and heartbreak.

John knew this, and so when he proposed to me, he vowed, "Your life with me will be a bed of roses!"

I was deeply touched by John's sentiment, especially since I knew he would do everything he could to make good on his promise. But of course, hardships come in life no matter how wonderfully our spouses treat us. And by the time our tenth anniversary rolled down, we'd experienced our share of stress and difficulty. It had been the hardest year we'd encountered together so far. What if John actually forgot our anniversary? After all, I'd been disappointed by men so many times before.

I need not have worried. John took me to a beautiful restaurant where he'd reserved a table with a lovely view. After a delicious, romantic meal by candlelight, we returned home and prepared for bed. In our bathroom, I brushed my hair a long time and applied some of John's favorite perfume.
When I came back into the bedroom, I noticed that John was smiling like an excited little boy. I couldn't imagine what he'd been up to. Then suddenly he folded the bedcovers back, and I gasped with delight and surprise. The entire bed was covered in rose petals, their fragrance filling the room.

“John, how did you do this? Where did you get all these roses?"

"Well," he said with a big grin," I called the florist and ordered pale pink Oceana roses like the ones you carried in your bouquet when we married. I requested that the blossoms be full and that the roses not be arranged. Then I spent hours gently pulling the petals apart."

I was so overwhelmed by his gesture that my eyes spilled over with tears. As John kissed them away, he gently held me and whispered, "Didn't I promise you a bed of roses when I proposed?"

"Yes, you did! But I never..."

That evening John and I celebrated our anniversary in a garden of love--and there were no thorns. I felt my wounded heart let go of old pains and lingering doubts. In their place, a healing peace engulfed me, and I fully understood the words from 1 John 4:18 for the first time:

"Perfect love drives out fear."

"LIVE NOW, BELIEVE ME, WAIT NOT TILL TOMORROW; GATHER THE ROSES OF LIFE TODAY." -

Customer: Well, after much consideration, I've decided to install Love. Can you guide me though the process?

Tech Support: Yes. I can help you. Are you ready to proceed?

Customer: Well, I'm not very technical, but I think I'm ready. What do I do first?

Tech Support: The first step is to open your Heart. Have you located your Heart?

Customer: Yes, but there are several other programs running now. Is it okay to install Love while they are running?

Tech Support: What programs are running?

Customer: Let's see, I have Past Hurt, Low Self- Esteem, Grudge and Resentment running right now.

Tech Support: No problem, Love will gradually erase Past Hurt from your current operating system. It may remain in your permanent memory but it will no longer disrupt other programs. Love will eventually override Low Self-Esteem with a module of its own called High Self-Esteem. However, you have to completely turn off Grudge and Resentment. Those programs prevent Love from being properly installed. Can you turn those off?

Customer: I don't know how to turn them off. Can you tell me how?

Tech Support: With pleasure. Go to your start menu and invoke Forgiveness. Do this as many times as necessary until Grudge and Resentment have been completely erased.

Customer: Okay, done! Love has started installing itself. Is that normal?

Tech Support: Yes, but remember that you have only the base program. You need to begin connecting to other Hearts in order to get the upgrades.

Customer: Oops! I have an error message already. It says, "Error - Program not run on external components." What should I do?

Tech Support: Don't worry. It means that the Love program is set up to run on Internal Hearts, but has not yet been run on your Heart. In non-technical terms, it simply means you have to Love yourself before you can Love others.

Customer: So, what should I do?

Tech Support: Pull down Self-Acceptance; then click on the following files: Forgive-Self; Realize Your Worth; and Acknowledge your Limitations.

Customer: Okay, done.

Tech Support: Now, copy them to the "My Heart" directory. The system will overwrite any conflicting files and begin patching faulty programming. Also, you need to delete Verbose Self-Criticism from all directories and empty your Recycle Bin to make sure it is completely gone and never comes back.

Customer: Got it. Hey! My heart is filling up with new files. Smile is playing on my monitor and Peace and Contentment are copying themselves all over My Heart. Is this normal?

Tech Support: Sometimes. For others it takes awhile, but eventually everything gets it at the proper time. So Love is installed and running. One more thing before we hang up. Love is Freeware. Be sure to give it and its various modules to everyone you meet. They will in turn share it with others and return some cool modules back to you.

Customer: Thank you, God.
